What do you write in a wedding card?

Humour suits wedding cards, but read the room. A joke about divorce or exes has never landed well in a wedding card.

Remember the sender’s name on the back if the envelope contains money or gift cards. Bridal couples who have to thank afterwards are very grateful for that.

If colleagues, friends or family are giving a joint gift, the card quickly becomes a logistical exercise. The sheet gets passed around, some are sick, some forget, and the last one gets half a centimetre of space in the bottom corner.

Decide the order and space in advance.

• Divide the card into sections so everyone gets equal room. One person writes the introduction.
• “From the whole gang at work” at the top, so no one has to repeat it. Set a deadline before the wedding.
• Not the same day. Or let everyone write separately

Four classic blunders

• Jokes about divorce, ex-relationships or “last chance to run away”.
• Asking about children. It’s the most common and often hits a sore spot you don’t know about.
• Writing only to the one you know, and mentioning the other as “and your husband”.
• Inside jokes the rest of the table won’t understand if the card is read aloud.
