How much do you give as a confirmation gift?

There’s no rule, but there are numbers. Here’s what Norwegians actually give as confirmation gifts, sorted by how close you are to the confirmand – and why the amount matters less than you think.

Det korte svaret

Common amounts

435 til 5 950 kroner

Spennet følger hvor nær du står konfirmanten. Naboer og bekjente i nedre ende, foreldre i øvre. De fleste gjester lander mellom 500 og 1 500 kroner.

There is no right answer, and no one expects you to hit a specific number. But because the question is so hard to ask out loud, it’s useful to know what others actually do.

Notice how steep the curve is: parents and grandparents account for most of the total, while everyone else is just a fraction. If you're in the lower half of the table, that's completely normal — and that's where most guests are.

Surveys have shown that a confirmand typically receives just over 28,000 kroner, with a slightly higher average for boys than girls. That number mostly reflects how many people are invited.

De tilfellene folk lurer mest på

Neighbour

400–500 kroner. This level is remarkably stable, and no more is expected. Many neighbours just give a greeting card, and that’s perfectly fine too.

Friends' children

Around 500 kroner. If you’re close friends and the families socialise a lot, it often rises to 800–1,000.

Niece or nephew

Around 1,300 kroner. This is considered close family, so it’s clearly above the friend level.

Godparent

Around 1,420 kroner. The godparent role carries expectations beyond family ties — many godparents give more than aunts and uncles.

When several siblings are confirmed

Give the same amount. Children compare, and it’s remembered for many years if the second got less than the first.

Tre ting som betyr mer enn beløpet

  • That there’s something written in the card. An envelope with just money isn’t remembered. A message that says something specific is.
  • That the amount suits your finances. No table is worth stretching yourself for. The confirmand has no idea what you can afford, and doesn’t care.
  • That the confirmand can spend it on something they want. Fourteen-year-olds have very clear preferences. That’s why money and gift cards dominate this category.

Hva skriver du i kortet?

That’s the harder half. We’ve gathered 18 ready-made greetings for the confirmand in what to write in a confirmation card, and 14 original poems in poems for the confirmand.

If several people are going in together on the gift, joint gift explains how to collect and include a greeting from everyone.

Frequently asked questions about confirmation gifts

How much do you give as a confirmation gift?

It depends on how close you are to the confirmand. According to a Norstat survey for SKAGEN Fondene, parents give on average NOK 5,950, grandparents NOK 3,750, godparents NOK 1,420, aunts and uncles NOK 1,300, while family friends give around NOK 520 and neighbours around NOK 435.

How much do you give as a confirmation gift to a neighbour?

Around 400–500 kroner is usual. Neighbours and peripheral acquaintances consistently give this amount, and no more is expected. A card with a greeting means more than stretching the amount.

How much do you give to friends’ children or nieces/nephews?

For friends’ children, around 500 kroner is usual. For nieces and nephews – that is, nieces and nephews – the average is closer to 1,300 kroner, as they are considered close family.

How much does a confirmand receive in total?

Studies have shown a total amount of just over 28,000 kroner on average, with a slightly higher average for boys than girls. The amount varies greatly depending on family size and how many are invited.

Is it okay to give less than the average?

Yes. Averages are not rules, and no confirmand keeps track of who gave what. Your own finances should always weigh more than a table – and a thoughtful card is remembered longer than the notes.
