How much do you give as a wedding gift?

The question no one wants to ask out loud. Here’s what Norwegians actually give as wedding gifts, depending on how close you are to the couple – and why you can safely give less than average.

Det korte svaret

Typical wedding gift

1 000 til 2 500 kroner

Snittet for alle gjester ligger rundt 1 700 kroner. Nær familie gir mer, venner og kolleger mindre. Tre av fire gjester gir under 1 500.

The amount depends on your relationship, not how lavish the wedding is. A guest who has travelled far and paid for a hotel isn’t expected to give more than someone living next door — if anything, quite the opposite.

But the average is a bit misleading

The average is pulled up by a minority who give a lot. Looking at what people actually give, the bulk is lower:

BeløpAndel av gjestene
500–999 kr38 %
1 000–1 499 kr37 %
1 500–2 499 kr14 %

Three out of four guests give under 1,500 kroner. If you’re there, you’re where most people are.

De tilfellene folk lurer mest på

As best man

Around 2,000 kroner on average. But best men usually spend many hours planning, preparing speeches and organising the stag party — that effort counts, and many best men consciously give less money for that reason.

As siblings

Around 2,500 kroner if you give alone. Often siblings chip in together for one bigger gift instead, like an experience or a contribution to the honeymoon.

As a couple

Common practice is to give one gift from both of you, preferably towards the upper end of the range for your relationship. Not two separate gifts.

When you have to travel far

Give less. Travel, accommodation and outfit for a destination wedding often cost more than the gift itself, and it’s widely accepted that the gift is adjusted down accordingly.

When you can’t come

Send a gift anyway if you’re close. An amount at the lower end of the range, with a greeting saying you wish you could be there, is more than enough.

Penger, gavekort eller gjenstand?

Wish lists often exist, and then you use them. Without a wish list, money or gift cards are safest: most couples live together before the wedding and already have what they need of glasses, pots and towels.

  • Does the couple have a wish list? Use it. It’s the one time guessing isn’t necessary.
  • Are they saving for a honeymoon or a home? Then a sum of money is the most appreciated gift, no matter how it feels to give.
  • Want to give something lasting? An experience they can share together beats another set of glasses.
  • Write the sender's name on the envelope. Couples getting married who want to thank afterwards are very grateful for that.

Frequently asked questions about wedding gifts

How much do you give as a wedding gift?

The average is around NOK 1,700 per guest, according to a nationally representative survey from SpareBank 1 Østlandet. Close family usually give around NOK 2,500, best men around NOK 2,000, other family around NOK 1,750 and friends around NOK 1,300.

How much is it usual to give as a wedding gift as a friend?

Around NOK 1,300 is the average for friends and acquaintances. In practice, most guests give between NOK 500 and 1,500 – 38 percent give between NOK 500 and 999, and 37 percent give between NOK 1,000 and 1,499.

How much do you give as a wedding gift to siblings?

Close family averages around NOK 2,500. Many siblings chip in together for one bigger gift instead, or contribute to the honeymoon. The total is usually higher than if each gave separately.

Should you give more if the wedding is expensive for guests?

No, rather the opposite. If you have to pay for travel, accommodation and outfit to attend, it’s perfectly acceptable to give towards the lower end of the range. The host invited you, not invoiced you.

Is money a bad wedding gift?

No. Many couples already live together and have what they need for the household, and wish for contributions to the honeymoon or renovations. What makes the money gift impersonal is that it’s often given without a word – not the amount itself.
